A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out, people can’t see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars.
A team of scientists zoomed in on the supermassive monster Messier 87 (M87) at the centre of the galaxy using world spanning network of telescopes called the Event Horizon Project to create a first picture of the Black Hole .It involved more than 200 scientists around the globe using the world most capable radio telescopes called the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).
Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity passed the crucial test as the images confirmed to the theory with spherical shadows. That mass, by the way, is 6.5 billion times that of Earth’s sun. M87 lies about 55 million light-years from Earth.Scientist Katherine Bouman has greatly helped in this process. The picture of the black hole was created by a complex algorithm she wrote. A Hawaiian Professor has named this Black hole “Powehi”.
If you had name this Black hole, What would it be? Does space science fascinate you? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
