A chunk of our population feels differently about their gender and/or are attracted to their same gender. These people are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. For several years these millions of people have been discriminated against and have been treated harshly. However, now people have started to accept them and countries such as Australia, Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Mexico and Brazil amongst others have legalised gay marriage. (Marriage between the same gender/sex)
Taiwan, an Island located in East Asia has become the first place in the whole of Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. This event occured on Friday, when thousands of people gathered outside the parliament cheering and waving rainbow coloured flags inspite of people who are against this. Many of these people were in tears as they chanted slogans like “Asia’s first” and “Way to go Taiwan!”
The bill (legal statement) offers these couples similar legal services as it does to others. It will be effective from 24th May, 2019.
The president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen’s said “Today, is a proud day for Taiwan. We demonstrate the value of kindness and inclusiveness from this land to the world.” He also said- “Through legalisation (we) ensure that everyone’s love is equal and everyone is treated equally.”
