The amount of waste, especially plastic waste is creating big problems and is taking a toll on our environment. In around 2013-14 2450 tonnes or 103 containers of Canadian garbage was sent to Philippines, mislabeled as plastics for recycling. This action of theirs caused years of tension between the Philippines and Canada, especially when Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to “declare war” over the garbage.
This garbage had been in the Philippines ever since until they gave a deadline of May 15, 2019, to take back the trash. However, when this deadline was missed the Philippines were forced to take some rather drastic measures. They have sent out nearly 70 shipping containers full of trash back to their source, the city of Vancouver in Canada. The ship will take nearly a month to reach their destination. Canada has welcomed this garbage. Environmentalists and even locals gathered at the site and held banners saying “we are not the world’s dump site” and “Canada take back your trash”.
Philippine Foreign Secretary tweeted a post of a ship departing with the message “baaaaaaaa bye.” Amid these tensions, both countries hope to patch up.
