Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said that her government will withdraw the extradition bill, after causing months of chaos and protests. (See article: Hong Kong Protests for more)
The region was hit by it’s worst political crisis that ignited young students and citizens to protest against the bill that would allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to mainland China and be tried under their opaque judicial system.
With this announcement, Lam has agreed to one of the 5 demands of the protestors, more than 1000 of whom have been arrested. The other demands include an inquiry’s into police behaviour, amnesty for those arrested, and reforms to give Hong Kong citizens universal suffrage(right to vote).
